Why technician management is the second-biggest lever

After dispatch workflow, technician management is the second-largest lever in a service business. A great tech roster makes a so-so platform work; a weak roster makes the best platform irrelevant. This hub is for owners who've realized that their tech roster — not their marketing, not their pricing — is the real constraint.

Operator reality

The cost of replacing a service technician is roughly $25,000 once you count lost productivity, recruiting time, and ramp. Retention isn't a feel-good metric — it's the most leveraged investment in the operation.

The three jobs of "technician management"

  1. Recruit the right techs. Hiring well is 70% of the outcome. Hire wrong and no management process saves you.
  2. Set them up to be productive. Tools, parts, dispatch flow, app design — remove friction so they can focus on the work.
  3. Retain them. Compensation, autonomy, growth path. Most shops lose techs to small annoyances that accumulated, not big issues.

What "tracking" should mean (and shouldn't)

GPS tracking is useful for routing and for customer ETAs. It's corrosive when used for surveillance. The line: track location for the customer experience, not for "why did you stop for 11 minutes." Techs sandbag systems built on suspicion within a month.

The right things to track:

  • Billable hours per clocked hour. Utilization, the most important single number.
  • Close rate. Quotes sent vs. quotes approved on-site.
  • Customer rating. Per-tech NPS or star average.
  • Callback rate. Jobs requiring a return visit for the same issue within 30 days.
  • Truck damage / accidents. Safety, with judgment for context.
